Carbon tape microsampling for non-destructive analyses of artefacts

  • Original language description

In this paper we present a novel method of microsampling by the application of exfoliation of a surface from samples by carbon tape. The method is virtually non-destructive without changing of visual appearance of artefacts if applied carefully. Microsample maps chemical composition of sample's surface and is excellent but not limited for SEM-EDS analyses. The method is demonstrated on two archaeological artefacts - metallurgical moulds from Vyšehrad castle (Prague) metallurgical workshop from 11th century. In this case a new previously undetected elemental composition and elemental combinations of casted metals have been revealed, effectively improving determination of artefacts original purpose. No visual changes resulted from the manipulation with the samples.
