Organising archaeology in the Czech Republic: dispersed framework of legislation, institutions, tools and practice

  • Original language description

Although archaeology in the Czech Republic has gone through several phases of development, its basic framework is still defined by the pre-revolutionary law of 1987, well before the creation and ratification of the Valletta Convention. Czech archaeology thus works in a legal environment that is not fully compatible with the current needs and practice of archaeology. There are more than 100 organisations of various types authorised to carry out archaeological excavations in the country. The organisational framework for research is managed on an informal basis, mainly through Regional Archaeological Commissions, usually established by the National Heritage Institute or the Archaeological Institutes of the CAS. As a counterbalance to the vaguely defined rules, a set of tools centralised under the digital research infrastructure, the Archaeological Information System of the Czech Republic, was gradually created. Its main component - the Archaeological Map of the Czech Republic - now forms the backbone of the flow of disciplinary information. Despite the obvious shortcomings, it has gradually been possible to overcome the major weaknesses of the current law, to ensure the modernisation of access to archaeological heritage and to properly connect the professional and non-archaeological public. The paper will present the situation in the Czech Republic, outline approaches to solving the problem of the organization of research and its recording (including outputs) and present lessons learned for the future.
