From Pen to Device: Development of Activities Investigating River Archaeology in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

The presented contribution aims to provide readers with a comprehensive overview of river archaeology in our region, ranging from the first significant studies to currently ongoing projects. The first significant study (1969) involved the analysis of a collection of dredged Bronze Age artifacts from the Elbe River, authored by M. Zápotocký. Afterward, the topic of river archaeology was largely abandoned, with only a few sporadic cases, and was revived again at the beginning of the 21st century. At that time, a comprehensive evaluation of Czech logboats was conducted by J. Rogers. This study opened up the subject of water transportation in the Czech Republic and the relevance of researching this type of archaeological component in our region. Building upon these studies and numerous other foreign works, a currently ongoing project focusing on the riverine cultural landscape of the Jizera River has been initiated. Its objective is to identify archaeological potential sites within the riverbed through the integration of various methodological approaches from fields such as archaeology, hydrology, bathymetry, and geophysical prospecting.
