Architectural traditions of Pre-Romanesque central plan churches in Bohemia within Central European context

  • Original language description

In general, Pre-Romanesque churches in Central Europe reflect the exchange of knowledge about, and conversion to, the Christian faith, as well as knowledge of construction technology. More specifically, the distribution of central plan churches reflects the exchange of architectural styles and traditions. The central plan church has often been considered a foreign form in European architecture. This chapter demonstrates that central forms, together with the longitudinal ones, represent traditional elements of early medieval European architecture. Both forms originated in Late Antiquity and were spread over Central Europe by missionary activities from the Eastern Frankish Empire as part of Charlemagne’s political program. The choice of a central plan form for an individual church building resulted mostly from functional demands. The final design was a fusion of imported knowledge and local styles and possibilities.
