Managing and archiving archaeological data is a long-term challenge in archaeology. For research on excavated remains, it is pivotal to know where they are stored and have access to basic information about them. Persistent identifiers (PIDs) offer this functionality in a digitized world. PIDs are unique identifiers that are permanently and unambiguously linked to research outputs, ensuring they can be reliably retrieved and referenced over time. Each PID is associated with prescribed information (metadata) about an output such that it can be comprehensively described, increasing its FAIRness (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability) and openness. The International Generic Sample Number (IGSN ID) is the first ever PID for physical samples—including all types of archaeological material—and is the global standard for their persistent identification. This session highlights the importance and value of PIDs for archaeological material. No matter your level of knowledge about PIDs and metadata, it is open to anyone with an interest in describing archaeological material in a standardized way or registering PIDs for their archaeological material. The session is particularly relevant to those managing archaeology collections and records. To the above end, we invite papers that offer insights on: Experiences of PID adoption for archaeological material, including from those in process of adoption, Unique/interesting use cases of (un)successful management of archaeological material, including using PIDs, Efforts to develop standardized (metadata) descriptions for archaeological material or vocabularies/ontologies for material properties. Lots of time will be provided for discussion around the specific challenges that archaeologists face when it comes to managing and describing archaeological material, and the barriers to adopting PIDs. This session is organized by the IGSN Archaeology Community of Practice. Since March 2022, this group of archaeologists has met monthly to promote adoption of PIDs and develop a metadata profile for archaeological material.
