Devín Castle stands as a paramount national symbol for Slovakia, deeply embedded in the collective memory of the Slovak people. Its historical importance is substantiated by early written records dating from the 9th century, when it served as a strategic and political center of Great Moravia. The castle’s symbolic meaning evolved over centuries, intertwining with Slovak national revival movements of the 19th century, which emphasized Devín as the seat of Great Moravian rulers and a site of Pan-Slavic unity. Concurrently, Hungarian historical narratives framed Devín as a crucial military and border fortress, exemplified by the millennial monument commemorating Hungarian statehood, thereby reflecting competing national identities. Shifts in political regimes, particularly after the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, saw Devín appropriated for Slovak national narratives, often amid archaeological debates regarding interpretations of cemetery and walled, plastered building, which was found beneath it.
