An Academy of Sciences in Prague? Purkyně’s Akademia and Josef Hlávka’s Emperor Franz Josef Czech Academy for Sciences, Literature, and Arts
Original language description
The paper deals with two proposals for the creation of the Czech Academy of Sciences from the second half of the 19th century – proposal of Jan Evangelista Purkyně to build an academy of sciences from the early 1860s and later a successful proposal to build the Academy of Sciences of the builder and patron of science Josef Hlávka from the 1880s. Jan Evangelista Purkyně’s proposal was indeed much more sophisticated and modern, and was considered the prototype of the later of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. However, Josef Hlávka’s proposal fit much better into the atmosphere of the time and had a far greater chance of immediate implementation, also given Hlávka’s ability to financially support the new Academy of Sciences.
