The Unified Cooperative Farm – Agrocombine Slušovice: Genesis, Tradition, Interpretation
Original language description
The earliest unified cooperative farms in Czechoslovakia were established in 1949. Forty years later, many of them found themselves on the verge of economic collapse, with unprofitable production, obsolete technologies and hit by the changes in the national as well as global economy. Without massive financial support from the state and the centrally planned agricultural economy, they would have found it hard to survive. But this was not the case of JZD Agro-combine Slušovice, a ubiquitous presence in the media in the 1980s which became a veritable laboratory of Czechoslovak perestroika reforms and economics. The long transition from agricultural production to synergic industrial production, consumer economy and services was finally completed here in the 1980s. Their production base continued to be primary agricultural production (while today it bears the hallmark of environmentally-friendly business), but its organisational principles, pro-Western marketing strategies and technologies far exceeded the boundaries of the centrally planned state-socialist economy in the late-normalisation Czechoslovakia.
