Monarchist Crusade for Republican Society: The Legionary Fund and the ‘Castle’ in Interwar Czechoslovakia

  • Original language description

The article analyses the financial system of the ‘Castle’, a cluster of social networks around presidents Tomáš G. Masaryk and Edvard Beneš in the interwar Czechoslovak Republic. It focuses on the Legionary Fund, one of the key instruments of the Castle’s clientelistic network. Masaryk and Beneš created this fund out of the money earmarked for the Czechoslovak Legions that supported their liberation movement against the Habsburg Monarchy during World War One. The Legionary Fund shows how the Castle attempted to bridge the institutional weaknesses of the nascent republican establishment with money, and it untangles the (dis)continuities of presidential financing in Czechoslovakia with the political culture of Austria-Hungary.
