Possibilities of Using Military Manuals in Archaeological Research of Early Modern Military Sites

  • Original language description

Military manuals are one of the sources the use of which can be highly beneficial in archaeological research of military sites. Books of this genre, printed in Central Europe between 1550 and 1650, were written recommendations addressed to officers and commanders, suggesting how various problems of period warfare could be solved. Readers, however, were not obliged to follow them. This paper defines period military manuals and characterise their sub-genres that can serve as sources relevant for use in archaeological research. It also presents the most important authors of the books under study and their major works.
