“Boot Soles of War”: Production, distribution, consumption and value of military shoes in Czech Provinces during the Great War

  • Original language description

Footwear is a material constant of human existence. In addition, it is a strategic part of the military supplies. In this study, footwear is analysed as an important part of army equipment during the First World War and as an object comprising both social functions and symbolic meanings. Previous research in traditional military historiography has paid little attention to this subcomponent of military equipment. Therefore, the presented study is focused not only on the history of military shoe production, especially in the context of the First World War but also sheds light on the changes associated with the industrialization of the shoe industry during the war. The study focuses on the interweaving of military, economic and product history.
