The cultivation of Phaeodactylum tricornutum in crossed gradients of temperature and light.
Original language description
Phaeodactylum tricornutum, BOHLIN, is one of the most important species in the unialgal biotests. The cultivation of this species in the crossed gradients tests the dependence of the growth rates and morphology on particular combinations of environmentalfactors (temperature, light). The main advantage of this method is the simplicity and quickness of obtaining data from different conditions. The results of the cultivation of Phaeodactylum tricornutum, in the crossed gradients, showed that maximal growth rates occurred at temperatures between 15 and 23 degrees C. The growth rate is higher at maximal irradiance (approximately 125 micro mol. m-2 . s-1) than at minimal irradiance (approximately 15 micro mol . m-2 . s-1) but the difference is not significant. There were not any observed differences in morphology of algae grown at maximal, optimal and minimal temperatures and maximal and minimal irradiances. The conversion curves were calculated for three cultures of Phaeodactylum tricornut
