Comparison of PES membrane chemical cleaning efficiency using different protocols

  • Original language description

Significant differences between acid ? alkaline and reverse alkaline ? acid cycles of chemical cleaning were not observed. The acidic phase application efficiency showed similar trend affected rather than acid solution by optimal pH range between 2.5 - 3.5. Optimal pH range calibration by citric acid only is quite difficult and therefore combination with another acid can be more proper solution. Optimal time range for acid cleaning phase was estimated from 4 to 6 hours when 80 - 90% efficiency is achieved already in 2 hours. The acid cleaning is followed by water flushing and oxidative cleaning. Sodium hypochlorite offers low costs and good availability for oxidizing agent and pH adjustment by sodium hydroxide. Optimal time range for alkali cleaning phase was estimated from 4 to 6 hours or longer. More than 80 % of membranes were cleaned to 90-95 % flux recovery.
