Revision of chromosome numbers of Potamogetonaceae: a new basis for taxonomic and evolutionary implications
Original language description
New chromosome counts were given and previously published counts were reevaluated to provide a sound basis for systematic and evolutionary research in Potamogetonaceae. About 24% of the previously published counts were found to be erroneous and the extensive within-species variation in chromosome numbers was not confirmed. In contrast, our data showed both a systematic and phylogenetic pattern and were used to identify the chromosome number evolution in the family. Two alternative evolutionary scenariosare discussed in a phylogenetic context using phylogenetic trees based on two nuclear ribosomal markers.
