  • Original language description

Standardized values of algal growth potential (AGP) and algal primary production rate were determined in maritime Antarctic stream waters at 5 and 25 °C. In addition, the nutrient requirements of polar and temperate Stichococcus strains that were used inthe assay were evaluated. Growth ofthe polar strain was inhibited at higher nutrient concentration reflecting adaptation to low nutrient availability in polar region. The AGP values proved nitrogen limitation in the oligotrophic stream waters and no nutrient limitation was observed in mesotrophic ones. The heavy metal inhibition was not observed. The positive correlation between AGP values and water nutrient content indicates that this method accurently and comprehensively monitors the biological availability of nutrients in polar streams.
