Contrasting patterns of fine-scale herb layer species composition in temperate forests

  • Original language description

The local variation in the studied herb layer communities was best explained by topography and soil pH. Other important factors were canopy openness, soil conductivity, phosphorus content and C/N ratio. Most of the factors were spatially structured indicating a critical role of induced spatial dependence in herb layer. The strength of environmental filtering and spatial processes, however, varied among sites. There was neither the expected lack of environmental-based variation nor a prevalence of pure spatial variation that should be present at small scales. Ecologists should be cautious when generalizing results across sites and scales.
