Cyanobacteria and microcystin contamination in untreated and treated drinking water in Ghana

  • Original language description

Cyanobacteria and microcystins (MCs) were monitored in four drinking water treatment plants providing potable water for the major Ghanaian metropolitan areas: Accra-Thema (Weija and Kpong treatment plants) and Kumasi (Owabi and Barekese treatment plants). Cyanobacterial cells were frequently found in the final treated water along with intracellular MCs, which were detected in 17% of the samples (maximal concentration 0.61 μg/L), while dissolved MCs were present in 14% of the final treated water samples (maximal concentration 0.81 μg/L). Although WHO guideline for microcystin-LR concentration in drinking water (1 μg/L) has not been exceeded, the results indicate a borderline efficiency of the water treatment, possibly resulting in higher toxin concentrations if the treatment procedure gets compromised.
