Switching from monocarpic to polycarpic perennial life histories in a cold climate: a commentary on ‘Physiological costs of clonal growth’
Original language description
Identifying the reasons why monocarpic plants branch would help to better understand the behaviour of monocarpic perennials in cold regions. Without this knowledge and/or without additional data on plant lifespan (i.e. plant age determined through direct observations using marked individuals or herbchronology) we cannot reliably interpret that polycarpy extends longevity without incurring in any ecophysiological cost.
