Origin, genetic structure and evolutionary potential of the natural hybrid Ranunculus circinatus × R. fluitans

  • Original language description

Amplifed fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) and flow cytometry were applied to determine the genetic and cytogenetic variation among 36 riverine populations of the hybrid Ranunculus circinatus × R. fluitans in Poland, male and female sterility of the hybrid was also examined in detail. The hybrid is a sterile triploid arising independently in at least seven hybridization events. However, it may participate in subsequent hybridization events, resulting in a ploidy change that can lead to spontaneous fertility recovery.
