Tree regeneration in models of forest dynamics: A key priority for further research
Original language description
The study found that most models overestimate recruitment levels compared to observed data, though this is often balanced by higher simulated early-stage mortality. The diversity of species in recruitment generally aligns with observed ranges, but this does not extend to higher stand-level diversity. There's a discrepancy in models' recruitment mortality rates, and the complexity of regeneration modules does not necessarily translate to better simulation accuracy. Light availability effects on recruitment are better captured than temperature and soil moisture effects, but inconsistencies across models remain. The study underscores the challenges in modeling tree regeneration, emphasizing the need for detailed evaluations and methodological improvements to enhance forest dynamics projections under changing environmental conditions.
