Identifying the richness and evolutionary relationships of Ranunculus sect. Batrachium in its diversity centre in south-western Europe

  • Original language description

The first comprehensive molecular and cytogenetic study of Ranunculus sect. Batrachium in its diversity centre. We have demonstrated Batrachium as a remarkable model group for studying miscellaneous aspects of speciation, including polyploidization, hybridization and divergent rates of evolution of molecular and morphological traits. The diversity of Batrachium in the Mediterranean area has been confirmed to be largely misunderstood and only partially assessed by current taxonomic treatments. We caution against using single DNA sequences without an additional independent marker for classical barcoding purposes in Batrachium due to strongly reticulate evolution leading to the sharing of identical subgenomes by different taxa.
