Understanding Long-Term Abundance Shifts in European Alpine Plants Through the Lenses of Functional Seed Trait Ecology

  • Original language description

Here we show that long-term shifts in the abundance of European alpine plants are mainly driven by species’ functional traits and local environmental conditions. Species with traits adapted to warmer climates, such as taller stature and longer growing seasons, have generally increased, while cold-adapted and stress-tolerant species have declined. These results highlight how ongoing climate change is gradually reshaping alpine plant communities by favoring species with traits suited to new, warmer conditions.
