In previous studies we have shown that the germination of orchid seeds is inhibited by nitrate, and in some species very strongly. This probably reflects the ability of orchids to take up nitrogen from symbiotic fungi, which gives them a competitive advantage in sites with low nitrogen, and hence nitrate, availability in the soil. However, no other group of mycoheterotrophic plants has been investigated. In this study, we investigated one group of plants, the family Ericaceae, which contains closely related mycoheterotrophic and autotrophic (photosynthetic) species, and compared them to each other. We found high variability in germination responses to nitrate. Mycoheterotrophic species reacted significantly more negatively to nitrate compared to autotrophic species. However, the species responses to nitrate also strongly correlated with seed dimensions, as mycoheterotrophic plants generally have smaller seeds than autotrophic species. We have not been able to disentangle these two effects, nevertheless we can conclude that mycoheterotrophic plants in general, which nearly all produce tiny dust seeds, are likely to be negatively affected by nitrate.
