Environmental filtering and dispersal history shape plant distributions and biogeographical patterns, but their relative importance through evolutionary time remains unclear. Phylogenetic beta diversity, expressing dissimilarity in evolutionary relatedness among assemblages, can help disentangle these mechanisms. We analysed ~270,000 seed plant species worldwide, assessing how environmental dissimilarity and geographical distance drive phylogenetic and taxonomic turnover across timescales. Using palaeogeographical reconstructions, we estimated past and present dispersal barriers and least-cost paths accounting for water, mountains and unsuitable climates. Together, environmental and geographical factors explained most of the deviance in taxonomic (up to 86.4%) and phylogenetic turnover (65.6%). Environmental dissimilarity had consistently strong effects, whereas geographical distance weakened deeper in time. Past barriers explained little variation, peaking slightly at 20–50 Myr bp. Overall, ancient lineages dispersed widely, but environmental filtering still constrains range expansion.
