Long-term homogenization of Fennoscandian heathland and tundra vegetation is connected to the expansion of an allelopathic dwarf shrub

  • Original language description

We found that over several decades, vegetation in Fennoscandian heathlands and tundra has become increasingly similar across regions, indicating widespread ecological homogenization. This change is linked to long-term warming and changes in grazing pressure, which favor a few generalist plant species at the expense of regionally distinct specialists. The results suggest that climate and land-use changes are reducing vegetation diversity and distinctiveness in northern ecosystems.
