    Here, there and everywhere: widespread non-native plants in the world’s urban ecosystems

    Using the Global Urban Biological Invasions Compendium, the most comprehensive dataset of non-native urban floras to date, this study identified the most widespread naturalised plant species worldwide. From 7,792 naturalised species recorded in 553 cities, 302 species (4%) were present on all continents except Antarctica, defining a global urban florome. Of these, 96 species occurred in more than half of urban centres in Oceania, North America and South America, a higher proportion than in Africa, Asia and Europe. Cities outside Europe and Asia were therefore more homogeneous in terms of the most widespread invaders. Analysis of species origins showed that temperate Asia contributed the largest number of species globally, while exchange patterns differed among regions, including a strong one-directional flow from North to South America. Overall, the findings indicate that urban ecosystems outside Europe and Asia are more susceptible to recent plant invasions. Identifying the composition and origins of these invaders is essential for coordinated management.
