The patterns of polyploid speciation and the ecological consequences of ploidy-driven trait variation under the harsh climatic conditions of Arctic environments remain poorly understood. Here, we summarized data accumulated over the past decade in the Svalbard populations of mixed-ploidy arctic-alpine plant species, Saxifraga oppositifolia. Within a long-term field study, 768 permanently tagged plants were screened for ploidy level, trait variation and environmental associations. Svalbard populations of the species encompass a mixed-ploidy contact zone with the average cytotype frequencies 63%, 16% and 21% for diploids, triploids and tetraploids, respectively. Ploidy level of individuals is strongly associated with certain traits, including growth form, leaf mass area, flower investment, seed production and habitat preferences. Diploids usually dominate drier, warmer ridge habitats, whereas polyploids thrive in moister, thermally more stable areas. Interestingly, in spite of the harsh climatic conditions, we found rather low frequencies of unreduced (2n) gametes, indicating that enhanced 2n-gamete production is not necessarily a key driver of polyploid establishment in arctic species.
