Rare interspecific hybridization at the diploid level in Ranunculus sect. Batrachium

  • Original language description

This study reports the discovery and formal description of a new interspecific hybrid, which originated from the crossing of two basic diploid species in flooded sand pits in the Czech Republic. This finding provides the first unequivocal evidence of natural hybridization at the diploid level in Central Europe, representing a crucial missing link in understanding the initial stages of allopolyploid formation within this complex group. The research highlights how newly created anthropogenic habitats provide ecological conditions similar to the early postglacial period, facilitating the independent origin and long-term vegetative persistence of these otherwise sterile hybrids.
