Recent discussions on science policy, on interlinks between science, technology and value structures, which could have been comprehensively denoted as critical self - reflection of science, stimulated by a series of questions concerning the role of scientific and cultural intellectuals, their responsibility and stimulating initiatives. If their initiatives and new proposals, including references to potential risks or serious warnings, are to be regarded as efficient and meaningful they should meet withadequate response in the civic society. Well-functioning forms of communication, suitable conditions for critical social reception, specific moral climate as well as a fruitful interactionbetween stimulating initiatives and active society are vital for the future of science and society at the end of the 20the century.
