The paper questions John McDowell's view of the relationship between mind and the world. It argues that in his book Mind and World McDowell conflates what Rorty dubbed the 'causal story' and the 'justificatory story'; and that if we recognize that thesetwo kinds of stories can never be fused, the problems which McDowell tries to solve simply vanish.

Článek zpochybňuje názory Johna McDowella na vztah mezi myslí a světem. Argumentuje, že McDowell ve své knize Mysl a svět plete dohromady to, co Rorty nazval 'řeč příčin' ('causal story') s 'řečí důvodů' ('justificatory story'); a že smíříme-li se s faktem, že tyto dva druhy řeči nelze nikdy propojit, problémy, které se McDowell snaží řešit, prostě zmizí.
