Wilfrid Sellars's analysis of the concept of meaning led, in effect, to the conclusion that meaning of an expression is its inferential role. This view is often being challenged with the argument that inference is a matter of syntax and syntax can neveryield semantics. I argue that this challenge is fuelled by a confusion of two senses of "syntax"; and I go on trying to throw some new light on the concept of inferential role. My conclusion is that the Sellarsion view that something can have meaning only if it is subject to inferences, is viable and that inferential role is the right explication of meaning. However I also argue, pace Sellars, that the inferential nature of meaning does not prevent us from engaging in the enterprise of Carnapian formalsemantics.

Analýza pojmu význam Wilfrida Sellarse vedla ve svém důsledku k závěru, že významem výrazu je jeho inferenční role. Proti tomu bývá často namítáno, že inference je záležitostí syntaxe a syntax nám nikdy nemůže dát sémantiku. Argumentuji, že tato námitkaje založena na matení dvou smyslů slova "syntax"; a poté se snažím lépe osvětlit pojem inferenční role. Mým závěrem je, že sellarsovský názor, že něco může mít význam jenom tehdy, když to podléhá inferencím, je udržitelný; a že inferenční role je správnou explikací významu. Argumentuji však také ? a tady se se Sellarsem neshoduji ? že inferenční povaha významu ním nebrání pustit se do carnapovské formální sémantiky.
