The Pursuit of Prescriptive Meaning
Original language description
The paper suggests that the inferentialist paradigm is in need of an emendation. The notion of inference adopted by Brandom and his followers is too narrow to allow for a comprehensive and fully adequate exposition of linguistic meaning as it puts too much weight on assertoric discourse. The importance of inferences within prescriptive discourse is illustrated by rough analysis of some problems concerning scorekeeping in prescriptive language games.
