The non-Italian pope
Original language description
The paper offers an analysis of "He is usually an Italian, but this time he is not". I examine whether the sentence constitutes a counterexample to the template for analyzing Nunberg-style, descriptively used indexicals I presented in a previous paper. The verdict is that the template as it stands would fail as an analysis of the sentence, but that a reformed variant is able to offer an adequate analysis.
