Interstate Recognition and Its Global Overcoming: Extra-territorial Recognition

  • Original language description

The article focuses on philosophy of recognition among states and on its relation to recognition on the transnational and global levels. Specifically, it analyses positive aspects and limits of a concept of interstate recognition developed by Axel Honneth within his Critical theory of recognition, and show the process of articulation of transnational and global recognition. The first part of the article touches on the meta-theoretical plane Honneth's conception of moral realism, and specifies it with regard to the issue of the legitimacy of states. Then, it focuses on the fundamentals of Honneth's concept of recognition between states, and dwells on the necessity of recognition for each state. The second part formulates the dilemmas and limits of the concept of interstate recognition, especially in view of the global economic, political and cultural interactions, and in relation to a concept of the individual in relations of mutual recognition in a community. Then, it discusses problems of a transposition of the patterns of social relations from the national plane to the international plane. The third part focuses on developmental tendencies of international and global recognition, and deals with an important transitory concept of extra-territorial recognition. The fourth part analyses possibilities, limits and ambivalences of global state. In the end, it sketches possibilities of further examination of a theory of recognition at the transnational and global levels.
