J. A. Comenius and the Practice of Correspondence Networking: Between the Office of Address and the Collegium Lucis
Original language description
In the first part, this paper maps the geographical scope of Comenius' correspondence network in the context of the seventeenth century Republic of Letters. The second part discusses the growth and expansion of Comenius' network in the 1630s and 1640s, focuses on his web of contacts with the Gdańsk circle and the circle of Samuel Hartlib, and addresses the question of Comenius' position within the Hartlib circle. The final part deals with the topic of how the communication networks and intellectual exchange were understood and conceptualised by Comenius and Hartlib. To what extent did their projects of the institutionalisation of international communication, such as the Office of Address and the Collegium Lucis, differ and to what extent can they be understood as complementary?
