Religion and Violence in the Hussite Wars

  • Original language description

The chapter summarizes the problematics of holy war in the Hussite period. While focusing on both sides of the conflict – the Hussites and the crusaders, it examines the language of sacred violence, the rhetorical construction of the enemy, the backing of armies with theology and the religious factors in organizing and mobilizing for the war. I also takes into consideration parallel and competing discourses such as eschatology and apocalyptic expectations, national sentiments and political interests.
