Suárez on the Lower External Senses
Original language description
In the paper the author presents a survey of Francisco Suárez's theory of the lower external senses. The author proceeds in three main stages. In the first, he explains in what sense the external senses of smell, taste and touch can be called 'lower' as compared to the senses of sight and hearing. Second, he deals with the issue of the nature and kinds of the proper sensible objects of smell, how they affect the medium, the sense organ, and the question of the organ of olfaction. Third, the same subissues are analyzed in the senses of taste and touch. In this last part, the issues of the (ir)re-nducibility of the sense of taste to the sense of touch and the number of the senses of touch are also tackled. In the conclusion the author states that one of the most typical features of Suárez’s theory is the Jesuit’s endorsement of sensible species.
