The Prague Spring and the Struggle for the Workers’ Councils and Self-Governing Socialism
Original language description
The study concentrates on an analysis of economic reform in connection with the Prague Spring. In particular, it analyses the conception of self-governing socialism and the discussions relating to the establishment of “workers' councils”. It presents an outline of the discussions that took place between the conservative, technocratic and radical democratic approaches, the actual functioning of these councils, the development of public opinion, proposals for the authorities to be exercised by the councils and for election to their bodies, and also analyses the discussions that led to the formulation of the “law on the socialist enterprise” that would establish the workers’ councils formally by law. This analysis also features a polemic with the philosopher Jacques Rancière and with the conception that emancipatory politics by definition takes place outside the state and against the state apparatus.
