The study introduces Karel Kosík as a public intellectual in the era of communist reformism. It shows Kosík’s direct and indirect efforts to intervene in public affairs and places his best-known work, Dialectic of the Concrete, in this context. Kosík is presented here as Marxist-humanist thinker and public intellectual who played an important role in developing the notion of democratic socialism. The author examines in detail Kosík’s political engagement after the Warsaw Pact invasion in August 1968, and draws attention to the antinomic character of Kosík’s political strategy.
