Afropolitanism as a critique of conventional narratives of African identity and emancipation
Original language description
The article deals with a highly relevant issue of Afropolitanism as a critique of conventional narratives of African identity and emancipation. The search for African identity and the rehabilitation of Negro-African cultures was, throughout the twentieth century, a powerful and mobilizing utopia. This search was formulated through two theoretical and political postulates including Negritude and Pan-Africanism. The advent of globalization allowed the emergence of new narratives including Afropolitanism. This way of thinking stands out from the mono-cultural and essentialist traits characterizing Negritude and Pan-Africanism in favor of the multicultural, hybrid or Creole premises as concerning African identity. This chapter aims at examining the main articulations of the Afropolitanism narrative as formulated by Achille Mbembe, its philosophical background, as well as at highlighting both its connections and divergences with conventional theories of African identity and emancipation.
