The Concept of Conversion in Patočka
Original language description
One of the constant themes of Patočka’s philosophy is the „fundamental conversion of life“. In my paper I want to complete or complement Patočka’s descriptions of the conversion in three respects: I want to show that (1) the conversion, described mostly as an homogenous, monolithic act by Patočka, presupposes or involves other conversions: and that to describe the conversion, we need to employ not only the language of wholeness preferred by Patočka, but also the language of extreme: for (2) the radicality of the conversion consists not so much in its power to transfigurate our whole life but rather in its power to engage the deep layers of our being, and (3) the conversion consists not only in knowing the whole of the world but also in knowing the highest determinants of our life.
