Philip of the Blessed Trinity’s Summa Theologiae Mysticae. A Commentary on the Works of Teresa of Avila
Original language description
This paper focuses on the Summa Theologiae Mysticae, the major work of Philip of the Blessed Trinity, OCD (1603-1671). The aim is to show the profound influence of Teresa of Avila on baroque, scholastic thinkers of the Discalced Carmelite Order. The article claims that Philip’s entire work is structured in accordance with Teresa’s teaching on the spiritual life, especially as it is developed in The Life and The Interior Castle. Given the limited space of a single paper, four main topics are chosen to prove this point. These topics are (a) the three stages of the interior life, (b) what is needed for the interior life, (c) various mystical phenomena, and (d) mystical marriage.
