Oligarchy and Defense of Emancipation
Original language description
Based on Sofia Näsström’s conception of democratic spirit (emancipation), this paper proceeds from the analysis that the biggest problem of contemporary society is the spread of oligarchical order within the democratic system and society itself. Besides the influence of the oligarchy in the democratic process, it must also be analyzed that oligarchical ideology is eroding the very foundations of emancipation. Institutionalized social and economic rights embodied in redistribution are under constant ideological and practical-political attack. The main ideological operation lies in the continuing division of democracy and social rights in public discussions and spheres. One of the spaces of this ideological battle is the ethos and public argumentation around property rights. The paper will focus on these operations and space, and it will show how we must resist and defend the democratic spirit: by seemingly harmless but, in fact, profound re-conceptualization of real taxation of the global super-rich and socialization of critical infrastructural institutions (like for example, waterworks, power plants, etc.). These counter-operations would attack the basis of property rights which are the stronghold of contemporary oligarchs.
