“Death seems to me today like the fragrance of myrrh”. Scent and stench in the Egyptian realm of the dead
Original language description
The lecture is focused on the perception of scent and stench in the ancient Egyptian funerary sphere. The lecture presents the use of perfumes, oils and unguents in the mummification process together with its mythological background and it also shows some examples of how the aromatic material was used during the funerary rituals, such as embalming, purification or opening of the mouth, followed by the offering of the aromata to the deceased. Attention is also paid to the religious ideas connected with the topic: based on examples from the Egyptian texts, the importance and effect of the pleasant (divine) scent in the afterlife is explained, as well as the concern about the bad smell and its possible consequences.
