Love as an Ontological Solution. Patočka on Love

  • Original language description

Patočka occasionally paid attention to love, but usually without placing much emphasis on it. In some of his late studies, however, he gave love a surprisingly high status. After explaining Patočka’s ideas on primordial love as formulated in the 1940s, I focus on Patočka’s famous concept of the movement(s) of existence as it frames his mature interpretation of love. Love, as realized through the third movement of existence, is a self-giving movement through which one overcomes self-alienation and, together with others, opens oneself to “something higher.” Since Patočka’s late reflections on love are strongly reminiscent of some Christian ideas, I pay attention to this source of inspiration and clarify his concept of self-emptying, or kenotic, love as an ontological solution. After these explanatory parts, which aim at reconstructing both the rationale and the context of Patočka’s emphasis on love, I critically analyze Patočka’s approach.
