Ethical Dimensions of Play in Eugen Fink’s Oasis of Happiness
Original language description
The chapter presents Eugen Fink’s analysis of the conceptual constellation of the notions of ethics, purpose, happiness and human being whose meaning only appears when studied in their relationships, dependencies and mutual interconnections with the concept of play. Fink’s reinterpretation of Aristotles’s eudaimonia shows that play fundamentally structures human ontology and ethics. The ethics of play is characterized as an attitude that can successfully cope with ambivalence, duplicity, frustration and dependency. It is not built on the heaviness of Tantalus-like work and heroic effort to transcend oneself toward the divine. It is built on the capacity to embody lightness through stepping aside from the central position, to allow self-transcendence within the rules of the play and the flow of the spontaneous activity. As such play grounds creativity and transformation, as well as co-existence and respect. Fink’s claims can be supported by the etymological analysis of eudaimonia provided by Giorgio Agamben and by the dynamic account of emotional and moral development of the human being proposed by Donald Winnicott.
