Suárez on the Formal Distinction. A Shift in Opinion?

  • Original language description

In his Disputationes metaphysicae and other writings, the Spanish Jesuit Francisco Suárez unequivocally rejects the formal distinction advocated by John Duns Scotus and his followers. In secondary literature, Suárez is known precisely as the one who weakens this formal distinction, leaning instead toward a weaker, virtual, distinction. The author presents a different interpretative hypothesis according to which in Suárez’s early Commentary on Aristotle’s treatise On the Soul, we can find a discussion in which Suárez appears to defend this formal distinction. This context is a treatise concerning the type of distinction between the parts of the soul.
