Observant preachers and theologians in the struggle against the Hussites

  • Original language description

This article examines the role of religious orders, especially the mendicants and Observants, in the multifaceted struggle against Hussitism. Preachers and theologians of reformed congregations involved in the anti-Hussite inquisition, the preaching of crusades and in theological polemics are identified. Although the role of Observants was not paramount in terms of numbers, representatives of Observant branches of various orders were always at work when important issues connected with Hussitism were debated. Possible thematic emphases resulting from the allegiance of individual anti-Hussite authors to Observant movements are exemplified in Giovanni da Capestrano’s first treatise against the Hussites. Thanks to the authors who specialized in the production of topical treatises, both Observance and Hussitism became important themes of intellectual discourse in the fifteenth century.
