Mathematical Courses and Textbooks in the XVIIth and XVIIIth Centuries
Original language description
In the 17th and 18th centuries, mathematical knowledge was disseminated through various mathematical courses, that were used in diverse teaching contexts, including military academies and religious institutions, among others. The writing of these mathematical courses can be regarded as a form of communication that contributed to the shaping of “modern” mathematics. Their impact on mathematics education played a crucial role, the more so since these courses were widely circulated across different countries and institutions. Thus, exploring the readership of these courses and examining their actual uses, naturally leads to the study of local appropriation. This symposium aims to provide a cross-national comparative analysis of the circulation of mathematics through a variety of mathematical courses written during the 16 th to 19th centuries.
