Exoptanda καλοτεκνία. Code-Switching in Amandus Polanus of Polansdorf’s Correspondence and Diary

  • Original language description

The paper discusses the tendency towards multilingualism in the correspondence and diary of the Basel professor of theology amandus Polanus of Polansdorf (1561–1610). First, after a short outline of Polanus’ life and intellectual contacts, the corpus of Polanus’ correspondence is introduced and the criteria are specified on which the selection of letters used for the present research has been made. Next, the variety of languages present in Polanus’ correspondence is examined. Special attention is paid to code-switching from Latin to Greek, whose forms and functions are described through examples extracted from his correspondence. Then, the paper examines the code-switching from vernaculars to Latin and from Latin to vernaculars, which is particularly found in Polanus’ diary. Finally, valid conclusions are made as to which contexts (formal or informal) are likely to include Latin-Greek, vernacular-Latin, and Latin-vernacular code-switches.
